“Land of 10,000 Lakes” Initiative
FarWide Conservation Trust is excited to announce a new project initiative in the state of Minnesota. A state long known as “the land of 10,000 lakes” also has a huge challenge with maintaining healthy and productive lakes. Some lakes suffer from excess runoff of harmful pollutants like phosphorus fertilizers from agricultural and urban areas. The fertilizers promote algae growth and turns lakes “green” in the summer. Other lakes are full of invasive carp that feed on the bottom of the lake, stirring up sediments and damaging submerged aquatic plants that are so important for native fish and wildlife, like waterfowl. FarWide will be working with partners to address these concerns through innovative strategies to manage water levels, improve water quality and remove invasive carp all aimed at restoring healthy lake ecosystems.
